So you need an editor?

I'm glad you found me.

Congratulations – you’ve finished your writing project! You’re here because you know (or maybe just suspect) that your writing could use a fresh pair of eyes to tidy it up.

Let me help you!

As a former scientist, I have years of experience breaking sentences down and building them back up again word by word, character by character, until they say exactly what I want them to say (often within draconian space limits).

Does your text have a science and/or research focus? Great! I’ve been in your shoes and can help ensure your work is presented as clearly and coherently as possible, and is aimed at the expected expertise level of your audience.

Not a scientist or researcher? Great! I’m used to scrutinizing the details while keeping the big picture in mind, which any text needs regardless of form or content. Tell me about your intended readership and I’ll help you make your text the best it can be.

Are you a publisher or managing editor looking for freelancers? Look no further: I can edit to your house style in a timely and efficient manner, ensuring everything you publish looks the way you want it to.

“Heather has been part of the editorial team at the Dorothy Dunnett Society since 2016. She assists the editor with sourcing and copyediting content, and is an invaluable member of the proofreading team. She has an eye for accuracy and consistency, and has an excellent grasp of language. Conscientious and thorough, Heather also has great people skills, and deals with problems and queries in a constructive and empathetic manner. She has recently taken on the responsibility of editing and managing one of our publications through to production, and we will definitely be asking her to take on more such projects. I happily recommend Heather to any business that is looking for a highly competent, calm and efficient freelance copyeditor and proofreader.”

“Heather has been helping out here at The Public Domain Review for a few years now and I cannot recommend her highly enough. Tasked with copyediting our essays on a wide range of historical subjects, as well as proofreading our annual essays book, we’ve always been able to rely on her meticulous eye, considered observations, and turning things around in a timely manner (often to a tight deadline!). A true pleasure to work with.”

My Services

Copyediting

This is a text’s final editing stage, where checks are made for grammatical errors and inconsistencies both in the writing and in style. Fact checking can be included.

Proofreading

For texts that have passed through all the editing stages and (often) have been type set. I give it a final going-over to catch errors that may have squeaked past the editing stage.

Answer Checking

I can check answers in educational materials. Get in touch if you need mathematics, physics, or astronomy exercises reviewed for accuracy.
